Based on Fionia Lightings groundbreaking achievements in LED lighting for greenhouses, the Danish Energy Agency has chosen to support a large-scale demonstration project in which the technology can be validated on a large scale. The project grant is a continuation of an earlier EUDP project focusing on developing a robust and reliable prototype. In the evaluation of the application, it was stated among other things that:
The strength of the Danish concept is that it does not solely deal with the lighting aspects, but focuses on a complete solution which takes account of other aspects of "effective greenhouse technology", and where product development is driven by ongoing testing of partial solutions under realistic conditions. The optimal use of LEDs requires changes in cultivation practices and adaptation to different plant types. Here, the project team is very solid, which substantiates the possibility of reaching a favorable competitive position internationally.
The project team comprises Gartneriet PKM nursery, Senmatic A/S, the University of Southern Denmark and Fionia Lighting.
The project grant comes from EUDP, who have just completed this year’s first round of funding, and has chosen to support 23 projects in development and demonstration of new technologies for renewable energy and energy optimisation with a total of 246 million DKK. In this round, 116 applications with total budgets of approx. 1.9 billion DKK were processed with a total requested funding of approx. 950 million DKK. Most of the funded projects and the largest grants given were for fuel cell and biomass technology. In both areas, six projects received about 90 million DKK in funding. In addition, the program has granted funding for projects in the fields of wind and solar power, and energy efficient technologies.
